The Bury Hospice Board of Trustees

Simon Attwell

Simon qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1973 and joined Deloitte in 1975, managing major parastatal audits and investigations based in the capital Lusaka. He joined a client company in 1978 that was owned by British Airways and then spent a further two years in Africa.

in Saudi Arabia, where his youngest daughter was born, eventually returning to the UK in 1984 to manage their middle east Aviation and Medical businesses after the company was sold to STC and then BT where he rose to the position of Comptroller and General Manager.

He joined Racal Electronics (founder of Vodafone) in 1989 as Finance Director of their specialised business group of 46 worldwide companies and oversaw a growth in profits from £8m to £34m in under 4 years.

He joined the Board of Tunstall (the emergency alarms and systems company) as Group FD, responsible also for Health and Safety, HR and Legal Services and took the company private in 1998, reselling the business in 1999 to HG Capital and eventually leaving the Board in 2002.

Persuaded by his wife to “get a job” after his retirement from Tunstall, he spent the next eight years working in the University sector helping to restructure and improve the finances of two universities and latterly as Interim CFO at the University of Hull.

Simon became a trustee of Community Integrated Care, a leading national health and social care charity, in 2003, chair of their audit committee and elected as Chair of the Board of Trustees in 2009 until his retirement after nearly 12 years in 2014. In that time he changed the governance structure, took Board responsibility for the absorption of Manchester Care which had got into financial difficulties and saw a growth in persons supported from 1,600 to nearly 5,000 and a rise in income from £60m to over £100m with a staff of 5,000.

He now spends much of his time as a season ticket holder at Old Trafford (cricket) and the Shakers in Bury.

Peter Holliday

The Rev’d Canon Peter Holliday is a Trustee of Hospice UK and in 2015 concluded the maximum two terms of office as the first Chair of Hospice UK’s Advisory Council.  He has recently retired as Chief Executive of St Giles Hospice (Lichfield, Walsall and North Birmingham) where he worked from 2000 to 2016.  He is a Residentiary Canon of Lichfield Cathedral (where he operates as Finance Director), a Chartered Accountant and an Honorary Chaplain to the Queen.

Peter joined the Board in March 2016 to bring experience of the national hospice sector.  During his time as Chair of the Advisory Council he visited many hospices and has also had the experience of running two quite separate hospice charities simultaneously as he was Chief Executive of Mary Stevens Hospice in Stourbridge from 2011 to 2013.  He thus brings insights to support the interim Chief Executive of Bury Hospice and is pleased to bring his experience, particularly in hospice governance, to Bury Hospice.

Peter enjoys classical and choral music, gardening and kitchen bridge.

Graham Yardley

Graham Yardley joined the Board of Bury Hospice as a Trustee in January 2016.

Now based in Cheshire, he lived in Bolton until 2001 and since 1995 had been involved with fundraising for Bolton Hospice, becoming a Trustee in 2001. In 2005 he became Chairman of Bolton Hospice, stepping down in 2012,but remains a Trustee there.

Graham was appointed a Trustee of Bury Hospice in January of 2016 and is determined to play his part in helping Bury Hospice through some challenging times, restoring the confidence of local people in the charity.


Paul Horrocks

One of the longest serving regional newspaper editors in the UK – with over 12 years as Editor-in-Chief of the Manchester Evening News –  Paul left the MEN after 34 years as a journalist to set up Essential Communications  in Bury, in October 2009.

He was appointed Deputy Lieutenant for Greater Manchester in 2010, and lives in Bury with his wife Linda.

Paul specialises in communications, profile building, media contacts and reputation management. His client list spans NHS health and social care,  sport, legal, water utilities, higher education, the independent school sector and international business consultancy.  He has anon-executive portfolio of mainly charities including the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity Fundraising Board,  and for three years was chairman of Bury Primary Care Trust. He is a trustee of the Fusilier Museum in Bury, and communications adviser to Bury Clinical Commissioning Group.

Paul is also an independent chair of the Stockport Together leadership group, comprising chief executives of the Clinical Commissioning Group, NHS Foundation Trust and local authority.

He also enjoys being a media commentator for TV and radio, and is a local radio and newspaper reviewer.


Ruth Robinson

Ruth is Managing Director of Ramsbottom based marketing business Brighter Business Solutions, and was appointed Trustee in June 2016.

Having worked with many private and public sector organisations including Bolton Hospice, Ruth brings not only marketing experience but a wealth of leadership and management skills including: Organisational Management & Leadership; Change Management; Strategic Thinking and Business Planning as well as intelligent scrutiny and empathetic, empowering challenge and analysis .

Through her work with Bolton Hospice, Ruth has come to recognise the value and importance of what Hospice’s do for their communities and the people they care for. She also understands the impact and value of volunteers and the importance of good governance in charities and hopes to help Bury Hospice get back on track.

Noreen Kershaw

Noreen was born in Jericho, Bury and went to Bury Convent.

She has acted in all sorts from ‘Shirley Valentine’  to ‘Coronation Street’ (that long ago she fed Minnie Caldwell’s cat!), the sitcom ‘Watching’, ‘Brookside’ and ‘Life On Mars’.

Noreen has since gone behind the camera and directed ‘Coronation Street’, ‘Emmerdale’, ‘Heartbeat’, ‘Scott and Bailey’ and the Jimmy McGovern series ‘ Broken’.

Coming from Bury, Noreen had always heard about Bury Hospice but never been until her lovely Dad was looked after there.  How can you thank an organisation that made such a difference to her Dad and family, and who were there with open arms in such difficult times?

Noreen became a Volunteer.

And now she wants the best for Bury Hospice and all the lives it touches.

Noreen has become a Trustee.

In her spare time Noreen follows The Shakers and is a Season ticket holder at Bury Football Club.

Donna McNicoll

Donna started her teaching career in 1990 and has worked for Bolton and Lancashire education authorities. She is currently headteacher at St Mary’s RC Primary School in Haslingden in Lancashire , which has been rated outstanding by OFSTED on two consecutive occasions and is in the top 3 per cent of schools in the country for its academic results.

Donna is also a National Leader of Education and as such works with schools in challenging circumstances, improving the quality of education and leadership across the country. She was proudly awarded Lancashire Telegraph’s ‘ Headteacher of the Year’ award in July 2017.

She became a trustee at Bury Hospice in December 2016 after experiencing first hand the exceptional and loving care her Mum received there in March 2016. She wanted to ‘ give something back’ to show her appreciation and is now passionate about both fundraising for and raising the profile of the hospice. 

In her spare time Donna loves to travel, walk ( at least 10,000 steps a day!) , read  and go to the theatre.

Support team

At Bury Hospice we take a holistic approach to care, which means we offer all kinds of wider support beyond immediate medical needs. This includes physiotherapy and family support with Chris Green. We also offer spiritual support with Rev. Hugh Bearn.

Plus, of course, we rely on our trained catering staff to provide delicious, nourishing food, and our housekeepers who make sure the hospice remains clean and fresh every day.
