Bury Hospice raised a staggering £50,232 from their Corporate Challenge – the biggest grossing event the hospice have ever organised.

“We are absolutely overwhelmed,” said hospice fundraiser Michelle King. “We cannot thank companies enough for getting involved and raising so much money for Bury Hospice. This will make a huge difference.

“It costs £2.2m to run the hospice annually, with 18 per cent from the NHS, which means we need to raise £1.8m every year so this amount is massive for us.”

The Corporate Challenge began five months ago with sponsors Maria Gribben, the Centre Manager at Millgate Shopping Centre, and Kieran Rafferty, from Maker Industrial Ltd, providing £1,000 to kick it off.

Each team was given £50 to turn it into as much as possible through their own fundraising efforts over five months. These included cake sales, sponsored athletic events, organised nights out and more.

The 18 teams who raised money for the challenge were: Bury Chiropractic; Bury Market; Crown Oils (nine teams); Garic; Gem Business Support; PM+M; Rakem; RBS; The Bolholt Hotel and The Stables.

“Rakem were the biggest contributors, bringing in an astounding £30,127,” said Michelle. “They were competitive and imaginative which was brilliant for us and they were Corporate Challenge Champions.

“All of our teams thoroughly enjoyed the experience and many reported an increased sense of bonding with their workmates and managers as well as a sense of pride and well-being that they were helping to fulfil their own company’s corporate social responsibility.

“This is the first time I have ever organised a Corporate Challenge and am thrilled at the money that has been raised and the relationships that have developed over the course of the last few months.

“I would like to thank all of the teams who have taken part, some of whom have already expressed an interest in taking part in year two.

“I would also like to thank Christine Thorpe MD at Digital Airtime Telecom for giving up so much of her time and for all of her invaluable help and support throughout the event.

“The event culminated in an awards evening at the Bolholt Hotel which was a huge success.

“We will be holding it again next year – and want to make it bigger and even better.”
