Bereavement Support

We help children, young people and families through one of the most painful times in life through bereavement and grief care, information and support groups.

Several bereavement services are available at Bury Hospice to help and support people to cope with the loss of their loved ones. Our dedicated Bereavement Support Team at Bury Hospice, offer bereavement and grief counselling support and emotional care to patients and their families within the borough of Bury.

There are a range of services and grief support groups available at Bury Hospice and anyone is welcome to get in touch to access these services. If you do have a connection with the Hospice we can also provide one to one grief and bereavement support. For information on the support available, please see more details below. Our Walk & Talk Group

At the Hospice we run a weekly walking group, which meets at the Hospice reception on Rochdale Old Road every Tuesday at 10.30am. The walk provides a relaxed and informal bereavement support group. The walk lasts for approximately 90 minutes and is an opportunity to enjoy the company of others and our local countryside. Getting outside and connecting with nature can be incredibly beneficial.

The walk is led by fully trained and friendly volunteers and the group is open to everyone. It is a great way to increase your exercise and meet new people. Refreshments and a space for a chat are available at the end of the walk at the Hospice.

Bereavement Café

Throughout the month we run a Bereavement Café here at the Hospice. It is a friendly group, offering company, a time to chat and friendships in an informal surrounding. People who attend our Cafes often find it helps them to meet others who may be feeling the same or have had a similar experience with bereavement and grief. It is a place where you can have a cuppa and have an opportunity to share experiences and feelings, with staff on hand to provide a listening ear.

The Sunflower Group

The Sunflower Group provides specialist child bereavement and grieving support for children aged between five to eleven years old, as well as their parents or carers. The support group was launched in partnership with Child Bereavement UK to help children through their grief by giving them the opportunity to explore their feelings, express their emotions, share memories and develop resilience through creative activities.

The group takes place at Bury Hospice over four sessions, exploring different topics using arts and crafts, books and giving children and their parents and carers the opportunity for peer support. The group is open to everyone, however those with a connection to the Hospice will be given priority.

Virtual Bereavement Peer Support Group

This is an online bereavement support group, which takes place using Microsoft Teams. It is a peer-to-peer support group, offering people who are grieving an informal environment to speak to others who have gone through a similar experience, share their stories and talk about their grief in a protected space. Each group is offered eight sessions, which run fortnightly. Please don’t let technology put you off as this is something we can support you with.

Remembrance Services

Each year the Hospice holds remembrance services and invites bereaved families to remember their loved ones by joining one of our events. These events are run by the fundraising team and includes our annual Light up a Life service in December, our summer memorial event and our memory walk.
