New Therapy Dog, Susie, Makes First Visit to IPU

Susie, a five-year-old working cocker spaniel is Bury Hospice’s new therapy dog.

Susie has started visiting patients in the Inpatient Unit (IPU) with her owner, Wes McArdle, a hospice volunteer, after recently passing her Pets As Therapy (PAT) training.

PAT is a national charity that strives to ensure that everyone, no matter the circumstances, has access to the companionship of an animal (pet dogs and cats).

The organisation is recognised by the Royal College of Nursing and is welcomed by medical authorities in many areas.

Only dogs that pass their temperament-assessment training, and are deemed as having a calm disposition and excellent obedient levels can become PAT dogs.

Volunteers and their trained pets can then visit people of all ages in hospices, hospitals, care homes, schools and prisons, offering friendly, therapeutic company.

Therapy dogs are known to reduce anxiety and stress, enhancing the health and wellbeing of thousands of people across the UK.

Patients at Bury Hospice were asked whether they would like Susie to visit their rooms, and they couldn’t wait to see her.

Susie got plenty of attention from patients and staff on her first visit to the IPU, and she will be visiting regularly from here on.

Wes, said: “Susie’s first visit went really well; she really loved it because she likes her cuddles and pampering.”

“Susie can give so much to patients, especially when they tell you that they’ve had a really bad day but have been cheered up by a dog coming along to visit; that’s a really massive thing for any dog lover.”

“Susie will be coming in as often as she can because she absolutely loves it.”
