Participants in the Bury Hospice Fire Walk share reasons why they’re treading the hot coals.
The Bury Hospice Fire Walk is fast approaching and the excitement is heightening.
The fire walk, which takes place on Friday 22nd March, at Woodbank Cricket Club (Stafford Street, Bury BL8 1AY), sees brave participants walk across scorching coals, all in the efforts of raising vital funds for Bury Hospice.
Entrance to the family night is free, and in addition to the fire walk spectacle itself, includes a barbeque, an open bar, and lots of fun fundraising activities.
Bury Hospice supporter, Karen Cargill, is doing the fire walk because she wants to “support the amazing work of Bury Hospice which is invaluable to so many.”
She said: “Over the last two years I have supported many grieving clients, provided bereavement support training, and sadly attended seven funerals, including that of my lovely mother, which was heart-breaking.
“My mum taught me to try to ‘give something back’ and this is my way of doing just that.”
Karen is excited to be taking on the fiery coals, and she has many friends and acquaintances supporting her and offering encouragement.
She said: “The walk will inspire others to believe that with positive thinking and mind over matter, anything is possible.”
Much like Karen, Bury local, Jane Chapman, will be partaking in the fire walk because Bury Hospice is a charity that’s very close to her heart.
Jane said: “I had been thinking about doing a fire walk previously, as I think it is very much about mind over matter, and it’s a challenge to strengthen the mind-set.”
Jane is braving the hot coals in memory of her mum, Norma Harrison, who passed away in March 2019.
She said: “[The fire walk] is the day before the fifth anniversary of my mum passing away in Bury Hospice, so I felt this was a sign for me to do this.”
Jane knows that she’ll feel a sense of achievement after walking the hot coals.
She said: “I am hoping that the fire walk will show how your mind can really overcome a challenge.
“Bury Hospice is an amazing charity and I can never thank the team enough for the care they gave to my mum when she needed it most, and to us as a family.”
Local resident, Trish Fitzpatrick is also a huge supporter of hospice care, having had first-hand experience when her dad received supportive assistance.
Trish said, “I am a big supporter of the services that hospices provide.
“My Dad passed away in 2017 and was provided with hospice at home care by Rossendale Hospice; they were truly angels to him, myself, and my sister.
“I know that the fire walk is for Bury Hospice and not Rossendale but I work in the Bury area and met with Nina Camplin, (Corporate Fundraiser at Bury Hospice), who I have to say is fantastic. Her unwavering enthusiasm for Bury Hospice is infectious, and when the opportunity to do the fire walk came up, I jumped at the chance.
Trish added: “I am very excited about doing the walk and hope the funds raised help to keep Bury Hospice supporting others.”
