Bereavement and Family Support Services

Our bereavement and family support services are offered to help people to cope with the loss of their loved ones.

On Friday, July 14th, we held a remembrance service - Time to Remember - at The Fusilier Museum in Moss Street, Bury. It was lovely to bring families together to remember, reflect and celebrate the lives of their loved ones. The service included a series of poems, music and lighting of candles, followed by refreshments. Thank you to everyone who attended our service and also to The Fusilier Museum and Olives Kitchen for their hospitality.

We received lovely feedback from families who attended our service:

“Absolutely gorgeous, thank you ever so much to all of you guys. You are all very special. There is nothing more you could ever do. I loved the way you all looked after my cousin. Floating angels.”

“It was very moving and brought memories of my dear wife - in happier days to life.”

“Lovely service, nice music and thoughtful speeches.”

Throughout the month, Bury Hospice runs Bereavement Cafés and a Walk & Talk group. Anyone is invited to attend the Walk & Talk group which takes place every Tuesday at 10.30am and the walk lasts for approximately 90 minutes. Walkers meet at the Hospice reception at 10.15am. Refreshments and space to chat are available at the end of the walk.

We run Bereavement Drop-in Cafés, which take place at Bury Hospice in Rochdale Old Road on the first Tuesday of each month at 1pm and on the third Tuesday of every month at Costa Coffee, opposite Marks & Spencer in the Centre of Bury between 2.30pm and 4pm. We also run a Bereavement Drop-in Group, which is held at Radcliffe Library on the last Wednesday of each month between 5pm and 6.30pm.

The Bereavement Cafés and Drop-in Group are open to everyone aged 18 and over. They are a friendly group, offering company, a time to chat and develop friendships in an informal surrounding.

The groups have been described as an opportunity to get out and meet new people, giving participants the chance to share how they feel, helping to prevent the isolation often felt after a bereavement and a chance to gain new friends.

Another service we offer is the Sunflower Group which was set up to provide bereavement support for children aged five to 11, as well as their parents or carers. The support group was launched in partnership with Child Bereavement UK to help children through their grief by giving them an opportunity to explore their feelings, express their emotions, share memories and develop resilience through creative activities. This group is open to everyone, however those with a connection to Bury Hospice will be given priority.
